Ruminations of a Squirrely Dog

More fodder for the unsuspecting masses

Bicycle Jousting

OK this looks like it could actually be a little more exciting than the roller derby I went to see a few weeks back ( I wanted to like it a lot more I really did , they were all such great people). Bike Jousting on high bikes. It seems you can’t fall hard enough off of a regular bike so let’s make it so we sit a few feet higher so we can get better bruises. This is actually a video from A Holy Ghost remix of LCD Soundsystem’s Drunk Girls. I prefer the original version but this is kind of interesting in a discoish way. Still think LCD’s This Is Happening is the album of the year at least until the new Grinderman album comes out!

I’m excited to announce the official launch of my new web site TCO Graphic Design

Beck’s Record Club

If you have not checked out Beck’s website recently you are missing some pretty cool stuff. Once in a while he gets a bunch of musicians together and in one day they cover an entire “classic” album. In the past they have done Leonard Cohen, The Velvet Underground and Skip Spence. He generally releases the songs at a rate of one or two a week in video form. Currently he is posting remakes of INXS’s most popular album Kick. The songs are usually interesting if nothing else but every once in a while they really hit one out of the park like “Never Tear Us Apart”. Go to http://www.beck.com/recordclub/ to check out the whole release so far.

Cheese Rolling?

Man, I thought motorcycle racing was dangerous! Who would have thought that the glorious sport of cheese rolling would send so many people to the meat wagon!

Marquis Theater? Fall of Troy? EOTC?

Envy On The Coast

Envy On The Coast

Wow! I thought I was still pretty with it when it came to new bands. I just needed to hang with a 16 year old for a while to clue myself in.
There are a ton of bands and music out there that have totally abandoned the old traditional radio, magazine, record store model of the past. It seems like bands like Fall of Troy, Envy On The Coast (EOTC) and others of their ilk get their word out by all the social networking sites as well as that plain old fashioned concept of touring and getting out to meet the fans.
What really struck me as a really enjoyable aspect of these bands is that they all seem to really enjoy playing and you get the feeling that they would put on the same type of show if they were playing for 5 people or a thousand. A nice departure from those jaded big time bands that charge 100 bucks to see them play.
In Denver, the Marquis Theater (promoted by Soda Jerk Presents) seems to cater to this crowd. Under 16? No problem, want to mosh or stage dive? Please feel free to do so. At the risk of dating myself, not since the early days of punk have I seen a place that caters itself to the younger crowd like they do. Maybe there is some life left in rock music after all.
